The limits set by the international community are being exceeded. Climate commitments from countries around the world are pushing the planet towards catastrophic warming of up to 2.9C this century, the United Nations warned on Monday (November 20). According to the latest version of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) report on the gap between needs and prospects, the continuation of current policies suggests a temperature increase of 3 ° C compared to pre-industrial levels this century towards reducing emissions each year be published before the COP.
Implementing the current climate commitments of countries around the world will only limit the increase to 2.9°C, taking into account their unconditional commitments for the future, which are not subject to any conditions for external support, according to this document published shortly before the start major climate negotiations in Dubai as part of COP28.
Emissions still too high
This value would be reduced to 2.5°C by including their conditional commitments (e.g. subject to receipt of funding or the efforts of other countries). This publication follows another UN report released in mid-November that concluded that countries’ current commitments will result in a 2% reduction in emissions between 2019 and 2030, instead of the recommended 43% to limit warming to 1, Limit 5 °C.
This warming is far too high to hope to limit the worst effects of climate change, which is already causing uncontrollable fires, devastating floods or droughts that deprive populations of income and food, with the current average warming at 1.2°C amounts. The report, published on Monday, expressed concern about an “acceleration” of record numbers on the climate front.
