“In the last 10 years, the number of victims of droughts, storms and hurricanes has been 15 times higher – according to the expert report -. Greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced immediately.”

Climate change-related storms and hurricanes are killing more and more people around the world, risks are increasing in Europe too, and there is increasing urgency to reduce pollutant emissions. We read that in the summary of the climate experts of the IPCC, the intergovernmental body of climate experts (UN), which meets in Geneva. “Almost half of the world’s population lives in areas that are severely affected by climate change – according to the scientists -. In the last 10 years, the number of deaths from droughts, storms and hurricanes has increased 15 times,” and Europe is also at risk. In these 10 years, “accelerated adaptation measures are essential. In the meantime, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced immediately”.
The number of deaths and people at risk from heat stress will double or triple The number of deaths and people at risk from heat stress in Europe is expected to increase with global warming, doubling or tripling with a 3 degree Celsius temperature rise of 1.5, says the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, identifying four Categories of the most important risks for Europe: from heat waves affecting populations and ecosystems to droughts affecting agricultural production, from scarcity of water resources to more frequent and intense floods. This is recalled by Piero Lionello, lead author of Chapter 13 “Europe” and Cross-Chapter Paper 4 “Mediterranean” of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (Climate Change 2022: Impacts, adaptation and vulnerability).
Temperature rise of 3 degrees Celsius Lionello recalls that “the number of deaths and people at risk of heat stress is projected to increase with global warming, doubling or tripling for a temperature increase of 3 degrees Celsius compared to 1.5 degrees. Warming will reduce the suitable habitats for current terrestrial and marine ecosystems and will irreversibly alter their composition, with impacts that will increase in magnitude beyond levels of global warming of 2 degrees. Measures to adapt populations to thermal stress and to limit risks from heat waves require multiple interventions in buildings and urban spaces”.
Significant losses in agricultural production are expected As for the risks for agricultural production, the scientist points out that “due to a combination of heat and drought in most European areas in 21 -Western Europe “it will be very high” at +3 degrees temperature, but “in Southern Europe the risk is already at a global warming of 1.5 degrees high”. Due to the increase in extreme precipitation in many areas of Europe and the rise in sea level on almost all coasts (with the exception of the Scandinavian peninsula), the risks for people and infrastructure from coastal, river and rain events will increase in many regions of Europe.
