Five soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in Colombia on Sunday evening, President Gustavo Petro said.
“Unfortunately, I have to report that there are no survivors of the plane crash in Quibdó,” wrote the President of Chocó Department (Northwest) on Twitter.
“I accompany the families (…) in this painful moment. We will not leave them alone,” added Mr. Petro, who ordered an investigation into the causes of the accident to be launched at the unknown time.
Videos posted on social media show the helicopter spinning in the air before crashing in the middle of the vegetation.
The soldiers were on their way to “bring food” to other soldiers in the area, where illegal armed groups have a strong presence, Colonel Hector Candelario told reporters.
The helicopter was “totally charred,” the colonel said, adding that witnesses said two of the soldiers jumped out of the plane before it fell to the ground.
