More than 30 years after the murder of a seven-year-old girl, a man in England has been sentenced to life in prison. As British news agency PA reported on Tuesday at the courthouse in the city of Newcastle, in northeastern England, the judge imposed a minimum sentence of 29 years.

The man, now 55, was convicted 31 years after the crime by analyzing DNA traces on his victim’s clothing. DNA samples were collected from 800 men for the investigation. The girl was found dead in an empty department store in Sunderland in 1992. Her lifeless body was covered in stitches and she had been attacked with a brick. According to the judge, there was a high probability that the act had a sexual motive.
