The iconic Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen was vandalized and painted in the colors of the Russian flag. This was reported by the Danish news agency Ritzau, which quoted the Copenhagen police chief Martin Kajberg: “Obviously we are launching an investigation to find out who did it, when and how it happened, we are investigating,” said the police chief Ritzau. The three stripes of white, blue and red were painted horizontally on the rock on which the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid sits.

Inaugurated in 1913, the monument has a high symbolic value for Denmark and refers to the scene in which the Little Mermaid becomes human, taken from the 19th-century novel by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen.
