Havana, February 20 (EFE).- The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, this Monday sent a message of condolences to the Brazilian people and its President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for the victims left by the rainstorm on the hit the coast of the state of Sao Paulo over the weekend.
“We send our condolences to the people of Brazil and to President Lula for the loss of life during the heavy rains in the state of Sao Paulo,” wrote the Cuban President on his Twitter profile.
Díaz-Canel also expressed in his message that they “are counting on Cuba’s solidarity in the face of these difficult circumstances”.
The island’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, also expressed his condolences to the families of those who disappeared after rainfall topped 600 millimeters in one day, one of the highest levels recorded in the country during that period.
Brazilian authorities continue the search for at least 40 people this Monday after heavy rains hit the coast of Sao Paulo state, leaving 36 dead and at least 40 missing in this tourist city.
The rescue brigades are working to search for survivors, in an operation officials say more than 600 police officers, firefighters and soldiers are involved.
Heavy rains over the past weekend have left a trail of devastation, including flooding, landslides and severe damage to the area’s roads, preventing traffic on those roads. EFE
