Cyberattacks will increase by 40 percent in Italy in 2023

According to a report published this Thursday by the Italian Computer Security Association (Clusit), cyberattacks against this European country increased by 300 percent from 2018 to June this year, making it one of the most affected countries in the world.

According to this analysis, the frequency of cyberattacks in Italy is currently almost four times higher than in the rest of the world. In the first six months of the current year, victims here made up 9.6 percent of the total.

On the other hand, more than 37 percent of global episodes of hacktivism, as the non-violent use of digital tools for political purposes is called, affected Italian organizations, the study said.

In the last five years there have been 505 particularly serious attacks involving Italian companies, of which 132, or 26 percent, occurred in the first half of 2023, and the highest peak was recorded in April with 262 cybernetic attacks.

Announcing the analysis, Gabriele Faggioli, President of Clusit, noted: “Given that Italy accounts for only 2 percentage points of global gross domestic product (GDP) and 0.7 percent of the population, this data is certainly thought-provoking.”

The expert stated that the financial and insurance sector in Italy recorded the largest increase in serious incidents, with 9.0 percent of attacks this year, compared to 3.7 percentage points last year, and in just six months the total number of attacks in the year 2022 was exceeded.

Faggioli also referred to the serious impact suffered by Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the last three years, following “the acceleration of digitalization, reinforced by the impetus of the pandemic”, as these companies “are obviously not prepared for it” . to withstand the growing pressure of cyberattacks.”
