According to the Ministry of Public Safety (MSP), Nicous D’Andre Spring should have been released after his December 23 video conference.
The MSP adds that “Two other detainees who appeared on December 23, 2022 were in unlawful detention as they should have been released on the same day. They were released the next day, December 24, 2022,” explains Marie-Josée Montmimy of MSP Public Affairs.
The Department of Internal Audit, Investigations and Inspection (DAIEI) is commissioned by the MSP to conduct an administrative investigation.
“The recommendations of the DAIEI after its investigation are carefully analyzed by the MSP and corrective measures are taken if necessary,” specifies the MSP.
The Sûreté du Québec and the Coroner’s Office are currently investigating to understand what happened on December 24th.
The victim, who was in prison, was specifically charged with assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and criminal harassment.
Nicous D’Andre Spring’s family will hold a candlelight vigil in his memory on Friday night. The young man was best known to the residents of his Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood as a rap singer.
A Gofundme page describes Nicous D’Andre Spring as a kind, generous person who always had a smile on his face.
