Death of William Hurt: Oscar-winning actor dies at 71

Oscar-winning actor William Hurt has died at the age of 71.

The actor’s son Will announced the news in a post on social media: “It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar-winning actor, on March 13, 2022, a week before his death. 72nd birthday.

“He died peacefully, in the family circle, a natural death. The family is asking for privacy at this time.”

In May 2018, it was revealed that Hurt had terminal prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

Hurt was best known for his Oscar-winning performance as gay prisoner Luis Molina in the 1985 film Kiss of the Spider Woman, as well as his Oscar-nominated work in the 1987 hit comedy Broadcast News, the 2005 suspense drama A Violent Story. and the 1986 novel Children the Lesser God.

The Washington native’s 45-year career began with a starring role as a scientist in Altered States after attending Juilliard. Roles in Body Heat and Gorky Park soon followed.

Hurt also played General Thaddeus Ross in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk and later reprized his role in the Marvel films Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow.

In addition to film roles, Hurt has also appeared on numerous television shows. In 2009, he was nominated for awards for his role in Damage, and also starred in Goliath and Condor.

Hurt appeared in many plays in the 1980s and most notably received his first Tony Award nomination in 1985 for the Broadway production of Hurlyburly.

His most recent performance was in The King’s Daughter alongside Pierce Brosnan, and he had a plethora of projects coming into production soon: the Pantheon TV series and the films The Fence, The Granite Men and Edward Enderby “.

Hurt is survived by four children.
