The true story of Waris Dirie, a naturalized Austrian Somali model and author, from her birth in the heart of the Somali desert to the most exclusive catwalks. Fertilized at the age of 5, she flees at the age of 13 from the nomadic family and from the man to whom she had sold her in marriage. With the help of her grandmother in Mogadishu, she makes it to London, where she works as a waitress in the Somali embassy. For a while she earns a living with menial jobs, then one day photographer Terry Donaldson persuades her to pose. At this moment, as in the fairy tale, the fate of the girl changes. Waris begins a very successful career, becomes a supermodel and, at the height of her fame, manages to tell her story…
Today, Waris is the United Nations spokesperson against female genital mutilation and a symbol of the campaign against infibulation in African women. From the bestselling autobiographical book of the same name by Dirie Waris, the moving and intense biopic directed by Sherry Hormann. In the role of Waris Dirie there is Liya Kebede (whom we remember in the hall in 2014 in “Samba” and in 2013 in “In the Woods” and “The Best Offer”).
