The two people on board, the pilot and co-pilot, were unharmed.
A cargo plane broke in two after an emergency landing at the Costa Rican capital’s international airport. The Boeing 757 parcel service’s DHL machine had hydraulic problems, as Costa Rica’s fire chief Héctor Chaves announced Thursday in a video message from the scene at San José’s Juan Santamaría Airport. The two people on board, the pilot and co-pilot, were unharmed.
After landing, videos showed the plane descending the runway, making a right turn, kicking up dust and stopping in a depression near the runway with a break near the tail. The fire brigade used foam to prevent a fire.
According to a report in the newspaper “La Nación”, the plane took off from the same airport towards Guatemala City, but had to return. So the pilot had reported an airborne emergency. Operations at the airport were disrupted for several hours.
