Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was elected President of the New Development Bank (NBD), also known as Banco dos Brics, on Friday, according to the organization. “On March 24, 2023, the Board of Governors of the New Development Bank (NBD) unanimously elected Her Excellency Ms. Dilma Vana Rousseff as President of the Bank, effective immediately,” the NBD said.

Likewise, the company said the bank was “founded with the purpose of mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in the Brics and other emerging and developing countries.”

Consisting of countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and Africa, the institution is based in Shanghai, China.

The NDB admitted Bangladesh, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay as new member countries in 2021, although they do not own as many shares in the bank as the Brics countries.

Dilma Rousseff, an economist by trade, has served as Brazil’s president for two consecutive terms and previously served as Minister of Mines and Energy and Chief of Staff in Lula da Silva’s two terms. During this time he also presided over the board of directors of the Petrobras company.
