At the hospital, a 72-year-old patient tried twice to deprive her neighbor of oxygen by turning off her machine. She was taken into custody for attempted murder
The scene took place in a German hospital in the city of Mannheim. A 72-year-old woman turned off the air on her 79-year-old roommate’s oxygen machine not once, but twice. According to information from the Bildzeitung, one of the most widely read daily newspapers in Germany, the patient felt disturbed by the noise, she had pressed the main switch of the device.
After an initial oxygen interruption, the hospital staff attempted to explain to the patient the need for the machine for her bedmate. According to the investigators, she was “dependent on the mechanical oxygen supply”. But about an hour later the device is switched off again, which this time puts the oldest woman in danger. Staff resuscitated her and she needs more intensive care afterwards, the newspaper said, but said her life was no longer threatened.
The suspect was remanded in custody on charges of attempted manslaughter, but the connection between the two women has not yet been established. A police spokeswoman admitted that such an incident “is not common here either,” according to RFI.
