Does the US have enough ammunition for a war against Russia?

US Chief of Staff General Mark Milley warned on Wednesday that a war between the United States and another major power would lead to “extraordinary” ammunition consumption and that the country must be prepared for it.

Ukraine and Russia have deployed massive amounts of artillery ammunition since Moscow invaded its neighboring country in February 2022, raising concerns about US stockpiles that have kept Kiev ample ammunition.

“The incredible use of ammunition” is a “great lesson” from the conflict in Ukraine, which remains a “limited regional war,” said General Mark Milley.

“If there were a war on the Korean peninsula or a power war between the United States and Russia, this consumption would be extraordinary,” he added.

“We still have work to make sure our (…) supplies are ready” to deal with any situations, Mark Milley said.

A senior Pentagon official, Gabe Camarillo, had said the day before that the United States would invest to produce more artillery munitions.

Camarillo said the country intends to produce more 155mm caliber ammunition, Javelin launchers and rockets, and ammunition for Himar’s precision rocket launcher systems.
