The voters of Guadeloupe have therefore decided to once again send two men and one woman to represent the archipelago in the Senate. Unlike the previous senatorial election, where the Socialists were able to elect two of the three senators, this time it is the GUSR that wins the proportional election with two of the three senators to be elected.

It is not always easy to understand the game of proportional representation, which can cause surprises after the votes are counted in an election like the one this Sunday in Basse-Terre.
Surprises for the general public, but not for the political parties, as they can position themselves to win or lose in this game.
Therefore, if the unity of the socialist camp had allowed it to achieve victory in the last elections, the socialist party could only count on its natural support this year. The feud with Victoire Jasmin, the presence of Jocelyn Sapotille and the two elected officials from Abymes worked against the interests of the Federation.
In contrast, the GUSR, which had only one seat in the September 24, 2017 election, has emerged united and strong from all these recent electoral victories and is almost certain of its favorable position for the 2023 election.
In fact, the list of outgoing Senator Dominique Théophile received 295 votes, while that of Victorin Lurel had only 178 votes. Behind Fabert’s list, Michely collects 121 votes. It remained to be seen who would get the third seat. For this reason, the proportional mechanism that grants a bonus to the list with the highest average worked in favor of the GUSR and allowed it to elect the second on Dominique Théophile’s list, Solange Nadille.

The parity law once again allows a woman to be among the elected officials that Guadeloupe elected as a senator.
Solange Nadille, who was previously deputy mayor of Terre-de-Bas, will become the first elected official from Terre de Bas to sit in the Senate.
