In July, it was announced that Donald and Stephen Glover had been tapped by Disney and Lucasfilm to replace Justin Simien as writers on a new “Lando” television series on Disney+. But not so fast. The project is actually being developed as a “Lando” film, Lucasfilm confirmed to Variety. Glover debuted as a young Lando Calrissian in the 2017 Star Wars film Solo, which was a major box office disappointment for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Stephen Glover first announced the news of a “Lando” movie during a recent appearance on the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast, telling the host: “It’s not even a show… the idea right now is to make a movie “Because of the strike, it’s like getting all the information over the phone at the moment.” That’s all the information Stephen was able to provide. Lucasfilm subsequently confirmed the news.
In December 2020 it was first announced that a limited series by Lando Calrissian was in the works. At the time, Dear White People creator Justin Simien was involved in the project. He dropped out and was replaced by the Glover brothers, who are developing the film as a film. The character of Lando was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Donald Glover revealed in a video interview with GQ magazine in April that he was talking to Lucasfilm about another Lando-centric project in the Star Wars universe. He said, “We’re talking about it. That’s all I can say without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy is chasing me.”
“Lando is the epitome of charm,” Glover continued at the time. “He’s a bit of a loner, and I don’t think there are many of those around anymore. It’s hard to be the smooth talker these days. Where is the line? Therein lies the danger. How close can you get without tripping over it?”
Glover added: “I would love to play Lando again. It’s fun to be him. It just has to be the right way. Time is valuable. Over the last few years this pandemic shit has really taken up people’s time… People have realized that their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that wastes my time or just brings in a paycheck. I much prefer spending time with people I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it might be. Lando is definitely someone I enjoy spending time with.”
