The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared this Sunday, December 31, President Félix Tshisekedi the winner of the mid-month elections.
He was re-elected to a second two-year term with 73.34% of the vote.
The main opposition figures did not admit defeat. In a joint statement, Moïse Katumbi, Martin Fayulu, Denis Mukwege and six other candidates condemned “a farce”. They pointed out irregularities and called for elections to be reorganized.
However, they did not suggest appealing to the Constitutional Court, which they said is subordinate to the government. They called for “massive protests on the streets.”
“Difficulties” during the electoral process
Denis Kadima, President of the CENI, acknowledged some difficulties related to this electoral process: “Some candidates have shown scandalous incivility, resorting to vandalism, intimidation, corruption and violence against some of our poll workers in order to stuff the ballot boxes and win.” . Those issues didn't change the bottom line, he added.
