Ethiopia cashes in $48.23 million from sale of electricity

Speaking to Fana Broadcasting Corporate Television, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Communications Director Moges Mekonnen explained that this figure has been collected over the past seven months in line with the government’s green energy policy.

Mekonnen specified that the latter contributes to the economic integration of the Horn of Africa and the mutual exchange of resources, thus ensuring foreign direct investment for the nations of the region.

The energy sale to Djibouti raised $24.5 million, more than the expected $22.8 million, while 20.6 million went to Sudan and 3.09 million to Kenya.

He stressed that the revenue from these exports shows the government’s commitment to implementing the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which unites member states in their quest for economic integration.

Regarding the national power supply, the official announced that they have an installed capacity of 5,200 megawatts, of which they are providing 2,700 based on the demand load of 2,930 megawatts.

When asked about the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam, Mekonnen confirmed that the hydropower development project aims to generate electricity to alleviate Ethiopia’s electricity shortages and boost exports to neighboring countries.
