Ethiopian PM condemns attacks on civilians

Addis Ababa, 20.06. (Prensa Latina) The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, today condemned the recent attacks on civilians in two regional states of the country and said that ensuring peace is a priority of his government.

Any aggression against innocent people and the destruction of their livelihoods by illegal and irregular forces are unacceptable, Ahmed commented on Twitter.

“There is zero tolerance for the horrific acts that have claimed lives recently in the regions of Benishangul and Oromia by elements whose main aim is to terrorize the communities,” he stressed.

Restoring peace and security to affected communities remains our top priority, said the Prime Minister, responding to violence unleashed in those two regions over the past weekend.

So far, the balance of casualties and material damage is inaccurate. However, Oromía sources reported more than 200 deaths in that area alone, while federal authorities, along with regional administrations, began investigating the events.

There is also no official confirmation as to which organization carried out the attack and whether it has an ethnic motive, although according to information from Al Jazeera, some witnesses “blame the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) for one of the deadliest attacks in recent times.” .

As of last year, OLA is officially an ally of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, an organization that attacked the Federal Army’s Northern Command in November 2020 and against which the government is engaged in armed conflict.

Amidst this war in northern Ethiopia, in which thousands have died and millions have been displaced, the aspirants face constant allegations of extrajudicial killings and massacres, as well as other human rights abuses.
