EU creates humanitarian airlift for Gaza

According to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU intends to create a humanitarian airlift for people in the Gaza Strip. “Palestinians in the Gaza Strip need humanitarian aid,” von der Leyen said Monday at the Western Balkans summit in Albania’s capital, Tirana. That is why the EU will create a “humanitarian corridor over Egypt” and the first two planes with aid for the Gaza Strip are expected to take off this week.

According to a statement from the European Commission, the machines transport, among other things, accommodation, medicines and hygiene kits for the United Nations children’s fund, UNICEF. Von der Leyen announced over the weekend that the EU would triple humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Aid money would be increased by 50 million euros to a total of 75 million euros, she said after a conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The EU is working with the United Nations to ensure that aid reaches people in need.

Following Hamas’ major attack on October 7, the Israeli army placed the Gaza Strip under constant fire and completely isolated the densely populated coastal area. The Israeli military is also preparing a large-scale ground offensive and has urged 1.1 million residents in the northern Gaza Strip to flee south. According to Palestinian information, so far around 2,750 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.

According to Israeli sources, more than 1,400 people were killed in the Hamas attack and at least 199 others were kidnapped in the Gaza Strip.
