European record: 19 cm hail found in northern Italy

This summer is not only responsible for negative temperature records, Monday’s storms in Italy also caused the formation of a 19-centimeter hailstone, which means a new European record.

It reported that European Severe Climate Institute (ESSL) headquartered in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria. O previous record with 16 centimeters it was only registered on July 19 in the province of Padua, the new giant hail was found now at 23:00 in Azzano Decimo.

O The world record is 20.3 centimeters. The record hailstone was found on July 23, 2010 in Vivian, South Dakota.

Confirmed registration test

After a thorough examination of the reports and photos, experts from the European Severe Weather Database (ESWD) came to the conclusion that the diameter of hail from the province of Friuli Venezia Giulia with 19 centimeters can be confirmed.

High frequency of hail in northern Italy

The high frequency of hailstones in northern Italy is consistent with ESSL research, according to which this region has seen the greatest increase in large hailstones compared to other European regions in recent decades.

O The formation of hail is closely linked to the formation of thunderstorms.. Ice forms in virtually all large storm clouds, but most of the time the structures are so small that they melt on the way and just fall from the sky as thick raindrops. Only in a minority of storm clouds do they grow so large that they hit the ground like ice.
