European warships in the Red Sea The Press

The EU now wants to send its own warships. Today, EU foreign ministers are discussing a naval mission.

Now the time has come in the European Union: three months after the start of Houthi attacks on merchant ships, the foreign ministers of the 27 Member States are meeting in Brussels to discuss plans for their own EU naval mission. The US and Britain began supporting allies last week and launched airstrikes against positions held by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Even though the details of the European naval mission are still unclear, according to voices from Brussels and Berlin, it will probably be purely defensive. A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Berlin made it clear that “attacking Houthi positions on land” was not part of the plans. Military ships were to escort merchant ships in the Red Sea.
