Fabian catches a cold, so the 14-year-old barely survives the blood poisoning. Now, the young German is fighting his way back to life.
At the end of March, Fabian caught a cold while swimming in Mönchengladbach. A few days later, the 14-year-old unexpectedly lost both arms and legs. At first, nothing indicated that Fabian’s life would change so drastically. “He had a normal cold,” his father told the “Rheinische Post”.

But the next day, Fabian’s lips start to turn blue. He throws up and gets a rash. His parents are worried and take him to the hospital. “It was only said that it was a viral infection”, the father told “Bild”.

Little chance of survival
Back home, Fabian’s condition continues to deteriorate. His parents call the ER doctor, who assumes he has pneumonia. Fabian’s pulse is getting weaker – he now has a 40 degree fever. The doctors transfer him by helicopter to the University Clinic in Essen. Fabian suffers blood poisoning from streptococcal bacteria and multiple organ failure.

The doctors give him a seven percent chance of survival and take him to the farewell room. Fabian’s family also travels to see him off. Fabian has been in a coma for 24 days and is fighting for his life. Subsequently, 54 days in the intensive care unit will be added. The lungs and heart are severely damaged.
“This courage to live is crazy”
“Due to the severity of the disease, the forearms and legs no longer received blood. They turned black and had to be amputated. Our son went through this process while he was awake and had to deal with it,” writes his mother on Fabian’s Gofundme website.

Fabian has been in a rehab clinic in Bavaria for six weeks and is struggling to get back to life. “What should I do? Soon I will get hands of art. And then everything will be fine,” Fabian told the newspaper “Bild”. “This courage to live is crazy. I couldn’t have done it,” says the impressed father.
Fabian’s parents started a “Gofundme” campaign for their son. More than 45,000 euros have already been raised. It is about buying a car in which Fabian fits with his wheelchair.
