O Apple AirTag has been the subject of much debate due to its tracking feature that allows people to easily locate their belongings such as luggage, pets, and valuables.
Only this time, its usefulness surprised again when a recent case revealed that Apple’s AirTag was used to help a family catch thieves who were stealing items from a loved one’s grave.
The city of Houston, Texas is facing a worrying problem in which violent robberies are frequent, causing great stress to the families involved.
AirTag helped find grave robbers
According to local news site Click2houston, Brazoria County, where Houston is located, saw hundreds of grave robberies resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in damage to bronze ships.
Thieves have targeted it valuable itemslike vases, and to give you an idea of the seriousness of the situation, some criminals have already gone to the extreme and dug up graves.
At Restwood Memorial Park in Clute, Texas, graves have also been targets of robbers. Once, criminals stole a $600 bronze memorial vase, which was carefully placed in the grave as a tribute.
To catch the perpetrators in the act, the family behind this grave took a technological approach and discreetly hid an AirTag in the vase.
Again the vase was stolen, but this time those responsible for the tomb gave the coordinates to the police.
Using this data, authorities were able to trace not only the vase, but also several other stolen items, to an apartment building about 45 minutes from the cemetery.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found that in total the criminals had managed to steal about 102 valuable vases from several different graves.
This collaboration between technology and law enforcement demonstrates how effective features like the AirTag can be in locating and recovering stolen items, contributing to law enforcement and security where it has come before.
In addition to this incident, the device has been recognized for its contribution to catching thieves on other occasions.
In Texas, for example, a restaurant was able to locate a 6foottall, 150pound statue of a bull thanks to the AirTag attached to it.
In another stunning incident, an AirTag prevented the theft of an armored truck worth $1.1 million.
These examples illustrate the effectiveness and versatility of this technological device in recovering stolen items and enhancing security.
