De’Von Achane begins to take over the Dolphins’ backfield: The breakout rookie led the Dolphins’ backfield in offensive snaps and production.
- Raheem Mostert had a slight lead in snaps played in the first quarter – 8-6. The two broke even at 10:10 in the second quarter. Achane took a slight lead 12-9 in the third quarter and Achane dominated the fourth quarter 11-2.
- Salvon Ahmed was injured and didn’t play last week. He played just four snaps midway through the fourth quarter on third or fourth down with 17 yards left.
- Mostert may remain the technical starter in the future, as some teams prefer to give their veteran back the first snap of the game, but Achane is the one who absolutely has to be in the starting lineup in the future, while it will be much harder to assign Mostert now start.
- Jeff Wilson Jr. is eligible to return from injured reserve this week and could move into the backfield. Considering how well Achane is playing, it shouldn’t be at his expense. This was also Mostert’s only poor performance this season, so Wilson could potentially be limited to a few snaps per game.
Good and bad news for James Cook: The Bills’ breakout running back received all of the goal-line work but none of the third-down or two-minute drill snaps.
- Cook led the team with 12 carries but gained only 29 yards. He also caught a pass for 48 yards.
- To the delight of his fantasy managers, he scored a touchdown on his second chance at the goal line.
- The only problem is that he’s starting to share more time with the other running backs.
- Part of that was Damien Harris, who played most of the snaps in the fourth quarter, but another part was Latavius Murray, who often did the passing down work.
- Murray played every third-and-long snap in the first three quarters. While we sometimes see a change at third-down back when a player is needed in pass protection, on each of those plays Murray either ran a route or ran the ball.
- Cook should continue to hit double-digit carries every game, but his targets have dropped every game and could remain low going forward.
