The People’s Party held its sixth major event this Sunday to protest against the amnesty for those accused of the trial, with a much smaller number of participants than previous events. According to the government delegation, around 8,000 people – and according to the party even 15,000 – people took part in the PP call in Madrid under the motto “In defense of the constitution and for the “equality of Spaniards”. The demonstration took place in the central Debod Temple, a few meters from the PSOE headquarters on Ferraz Street in Madrid, and a day after the meeting between the negotiators of the Socialists and those of the Junts per Catalunya in Switzerland with the Salvadoran diplomat Francisco Galindo Vélez as coordinator of the “international mechanism” of mediation agreed by both parties.
Popular leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo used his intervention at the event to attack the meeting in Switzerland. “This government is not in accordance with the constitution. We will not tolerate the opacity with which Sánchez meets and negotiates. Spain’s dignity and democracy are not negotiated in secret. Putting the future of Spain in the hands of a citizen of El Salvador is a humiliation. “I demand on behalf of Spain that this nonsense stops,” said the head of the conservatives, who announced further mobilizations.

In the sixth event organized by the PP in three months against the future amnesty law, the right managed to maintain the protest movement on the streets, but the influx was much smaller than previous concentrations. According to the government delegation, around 40,000 people attended the September event on Avenida de Felipe II in Madrid, and around 80,000 people attended the November event at Puerta del Sol. This Sunday’s protest was also the first called for by the People’s Party after Feijóo confirmed last Thursday to the formation’s revamped steering committee with a decidedly tough profile and after giving his people a “proportionate and proportionate attitude towards the radical government” Spain announced today.”
Feijóo has become increasingly harsh in his tone towards the coalition government, which he does not describe as “illegitimate” after Sánchez assembled a parliamentary majority of 179 deputies, but which he has criticized with various disqualifications. “On the side of the wall where Sánchez has placed himself,” said the popular leader this Sunday, “there are only lies and political corruption… Tension, discredit, non-compliance with the law… We will not question the legitimacy of the government, but yes, his unreasonableness, yes, his amorality and yes, his shamelessness.” In the front row, the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the regional president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, listened to Feijóo; from Aragon, Jorge Azcón; from Extremadura, María Guardiola, and from the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

The rally took place three days before the 45th anniversary of the Constitution next Wednesday and both Feijóo and Ayuso have invoked its defense as the party wanted to cover up the anniversary rally with “symbolism”. “The Constitution is more alive than ever. There is no need to create parallel constitutions. They oppose the unity of Spain, that is the key to their hatred of Madrid,” said the president of the Community. “What a humiliation it is to have to travel through Switzerland and other places. They call him an auditor on par with the FARC [Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia] They let us. Democracies do not die suddenly, but they disappear little by little,” Ayuso added, although there is no evidence that the Salvadoran diplomat took part in the peace negotiations with the Colombian guerrillas. An argument that Feijóo, however, reinforced. “Now it is an expert on Latin American guerrillas who has to tell us how Spain is dealing with one of its autonomous communities,” the PP leader added.
Martínez-Almeida also focused on the role of the Salvadoran diplomat, one of the few pieces of information that emerged from the meeting in Switzerland. “We do not need intermediaries or intermediaries, nor do we need to hide in Geneva. We have a future before us, and that future does not go through Waterloo or Geneva, with a fugitive from democracy called Pedro Sánchez and a fugitive from justice called Puigdemont,” said the Madrid mayor.

Those who took part in the protest this Sunday carried Spanish and European flags and some banners with slogans such as “Democracy, yes; Dictatorship, no” or “Sánchez traitor” and the proclamations already repeated at other PP events and in the Ferraz area were heard: “Puigdemont, in prison”, “Sánchez, criminal” or “He is not a socialist, he is a terrorist.” Although the protest was organized by the Popular Party, it was supported by members of Vox, such as MP José María Figaredo. An information point was also set up for Solidaridad, the union linked to the founding of Santiago Abascal, which called for renewed protests near Ferraz’s socialist headquarters after the event ended. According to the government delegation, around 1,000 people were present there.
According to sources in the PP leadership, after the meeting of the PSOE and Junts in Switzerland, Feijóo asked his spokespeople in Congress, the Senate and the European Parliament to “activate every parliamentary mechanism to force the government to report the contents of it . “Meetings, the agenda, the agreements reached and also about the identity of the international mediators that they try so hard to hide.”
The popular leadership does not reveal when the next demonstrations will take place, but confirms that the dates will adapt to the steps the government takes with the independence supporters. “We must win. We will not get used to it. We will not sugarcoat their alliances. The more they close the doors of Congress, the more we will take to the streets; the more they control the judiciary, the more we will join them “, announced Feijóo. The opposition leader accuses the executive of “controlling the judiciary”, while the People’s Party, despite the requirements of the EU, with a conservative majority and the mandate that expired five years ago, opposes the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ ) and despite the obligation to do so enshrined in the constitution.
