Fiona is advancing on the Turks and Caicos Islands as a Category 3 hurricane

Hurricane Fiona is making headway into the Turks and Caicos Islands southeast of the Bahamas this Tuesday while its heavy rains continue to cause flooding in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic.

Hurricane conditions are expected in the small British overseas archipelago this morning, according to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center in Miami. On Wednesday it will reach the south-eastern Bahamas, but already with tropical storm conditions.

As of 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, the center of the system was near 21.3 north latitude and 70.9 west longitude.

Fiona is moving north-northwest at about 17 km/h and is expected to turn north tonight or Wednesday.

The phenomenon has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and higher gusts. These parameters classify it as a Category 3 hurricane.

It’s the first major hurricane of the current Atlantic season, and experts are predicting it will intensify in the coming days.

At this time, its gale force winds extend up to 45 km outwards from the center. Central and tropical storm winds reach up to 150 miles (240 km).

After passing Puerto Rico the previous day with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h, the phenomenon landed in the Dominican Republic on Monday morning, where it departed at least one has died and more than 12,000 people have been displaced.

It left severe flooding, destruction and a power outage on the Puerto Rican island General.

Images published on social networks show the large number of fallen trees and blown roofs. Governor Pedro Pierluisi spoke of catastrophic damage, both to private homes and to public infrastructure.
