The first major trial began on Wednesday morning in Adiyaman over construction defects at a hotel, the collapse of which killed 72 people. This is the old Hotel Isias, in the center of Adiyaman, which collapsed in a few seconds during the earthquake of February 6, 2023, burying hotel guests under the rubble. The guests included a large group of students from Northern Cyprus who had come to Turkey for a volleyball tournament. 26 of them died, the youngest was just ten years old. Many parents came to Adiyaman for the start of the trial. In front of the court, they held signs with photos of their dead children. Rusen Karakay, one of the mothers, told dpa: “Everyone who built the Grand Isias Hotel is guilty.”
