“So far, 65 dead have been confirmed,” including “21 men, 17 women and 19 children identified,” Sao Paulo state authorities said.

Sao Sebastiao, a seaside resort 200 km from Sao Paulo, received nearly 680 mm of rain in 24 hours, more than double the average monthly rainfall, and the highest cumulative amount in one day ever recorded in Brazil, according to authorities.

After discovering the body of the 65th victim on Sunday afternoon, rescuers ended the search in the Vila do Sahy district of Sao Sebastiao, the hardest-hit area, according to news channel GloboNews, citing civil defense sources.

The Sao Paulo government did not respond to inquiries from AFP to find out if the search was continuing elsewhere.

More than 2,400 people have been displaced, according to an official report.

Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas on Thursday acknowledged that the SMS population alert system is not enough and announced the installation of sirens in risk areas and the construction of housing for the homeless.

In addition to the effects of climate change, experts blame uncontrolled urbanization for this.

In Brazil, 9.5 million people live in areas at risk from floods and landslides.
