For the camera of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung would make a strange choice – 01net

As the Galaxy S24 Ultra unveiling draws closer, new rumors suggest an important change Samsung could make. At first glance, this doesn’t seem like good news. But let’s not jump to conclusions.

The latest rumors around Galaxy S24 Ultra recall the disappearance of the 10x optical zoom of the Galaxy S23 Ultra to replace it with… a 5x optical zoom. However, Samsung doesn’t want to do without the x100 digital zoom in its next high-end smartphone.

Galaxy S24 Ultra photo configuration revealed?

It’s all about the “leaker” RGcloudS again. According to him, we can expect the following:

  • 200 Mpx wide angle (main), 1/1.3-inch Samsung ISOCELL HP2SX sensor;
  • 12MP ultra wide angle, 1/2.55 inch Sony IMX564 sensor;
  • 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, 1/3.53 inch Sony IMX754 sensor;
  • 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, 1/2.25″ GMU sensor;
  • Samsung would still offer 100x optical zoom.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra would thus have a x5 optical zoom, like a certain iPhone 15 Pro Max. But why would Samsung make such a choice when its x10x optical zoom is currently the best on the smartphone market?

On the subject, Jon McCormack, Apple’s vice president of camera software engineering, said they didn’t include 10x zoom on the iPhone 15 Pro Max for one simple reason: better image stabilization in photos and videos. So Samsung could be moving in that direction, although of course this has yet to be confirmed.

Some X users were keen to ask RGcloudS how Samsung planned to maintain the x100 digital zoom while reducing the focal length of its optical zoom. The leaker replies that the 100x optical zoom is supported by the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which has a 4x optical zoom, as well as the Huawei P60 Pro and its 3.5x optical zoom.

This means that implementing such a powerful optical zoom depends more on software optimization than hardware. The performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which is expected to be integrated into the S24 Ultra (at least in certain markets), should enable significant improvements in this area.

Huge performance, extensive Android support – the Galaxy S24 would push the boundaries

If this is confirmed, it would be a step backwards for some users. But as impressive as it is, we also have to be aware that the 10x optical zoom may not be the most commonly used focal length on the Galaxy S23 Ultra…
