Jerusalem:

An 85-year-old Israeli woman who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and released two weeks later said she met Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar in captivity and asked him why he was not ashamed of committing violence against Peace activists like her seem to have acted.

Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, was brought to Gaza from her kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel. She told the Israeli newspaper Davar that she confronted Sinwar when he visited the hostages in an underground tunnel where Hamas was holding them.

“Sinwar was with us three to four days after we arrived,” Lifshitz told the Hebrew-language newspaper Davar. “I asked him why he wasn’t ashamed to do something like that to people who had worked for peace all these years.”

“He didn’t answer. He was silent,” she said.

Lifshitz is a peace activist who, along with her husband, helped sick Palestinians in Gaza get to hospital for years, her grandson told Portal. Her 83-year-old husband Oded was also kidnapped from their home and remains captive.

Speaking to reporters after her release from Hamas captivity last month, Lifshitz said she “went through hell” during her two weeks held hostage in the Gaza Strip.

Lifshitz was one of four women released by Hamas early in the war. She said she was beaten when she was abducted but was then treated well during her two weeks in captivity.

Upon her release, she turned and shook hands with a masked kidnapper. When asked why, she replied, “They treated us kindly and met all of our needs.”
