Former US President Carter appears publicly after palliative care

After months of palliative care at home, the former US President Jimmy Carter surprised the people of his hometown with a public appearance. Carter and his wife Rosalynn appeared Saturday in a dark limousine at a peanut parade in the small community of Plains, Georgia. Carter was also a peanut farmer.

The Carter Foundation wrote on Twitter (X): “A beautiful day for President and Mrs. Carter to enjoy a tour of the Plains Peanut Festival. And just one week shy of their 99th birthday.” We probably had peanut butter ice cream for lunch.

Carter, 98, has been receiving hospice care at home with her family since mid-February. The foundation he founded announced at the time that the former president did not want to take further medical action after a series of hospital admissions. In mid-August, one of Carter’s grandchildren said, referring to his grandfather’s health, “We’re in the last chapter.”

Carter was president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, when he was replaced by Republican Ronald Reagan. He is the oldest living former US president. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his international achievements. He has been married to his wife Rosalynn (96) for 77 years.
