So the duo agreed to relive what Fred called “Black Christmas Eve.”

Here are some moving quotes from this interview to remember:

1. Fred with tears in his eyes: “The doctor told us on December 24th at 4 a.m.: “Open the presents, tomorrow morning you will go back to Sainte-Justine, she has aggressive cancer.””

2. Marie-Fée: “I had stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma, an aggressive cancer. But it is “the best cancer” you can have. […] Everything is falling apart. Nothing makes sense anymore. The only important thing is to spend time with your family.”

3. Marie-Fée: “What kept me going was the love of life, of family, of the sun, of being outside. It actually is.”

4. Marie-Fée: “I didn’t want to go to war. I just went to Ste-Justine and did the treatments. And I lived waiting. I was often afraid of dying.”

5. Fred: “The beast pounced on her. Let’s see… if we do this to children. Great anger, great fear. A big concern. They give you numbers, statistics, you know nothing. It’s black, it’s dark.”

6. Fred: “She was 14. She was an adult in medicine. Damn, the doctor spoke directly to Marie-Fée. She had to choose her treatments. She got the strongest, and she bet well…The privilege we have is immense.”

7. Marie-Fée: “I have been in remission for three and a half years. I do my normal activities like an 18 year old teenage girl. I study at CEGEP and want to study medicine. I want to treat people the way I was treated.”

8. Fred, explaining why he rarely talks about his private life: “It was Marie-Fée who decided to open up. I would never have told you. As we left Ste-Justine, she said, “It would be fun to give back what we received,” she insisted. It happened every month, two months. So my agent called… We came at the right time. They needed us.”
