French prosecutors confirm that police in Paris shot dead two people in a car

French police shot dead two men in a car that drove towards them after they failed to stop for a check in central Paris, prosecutors said on Monday. A third man in the car was injured.

The shooting took place overnight after Emmanuel Macron was reelected to a second term as French President on Sunday night, but there is no immediate indication that the incident was linked to the election or militant activity.

The police first spotted the car on the “Pont Neuf” in central Paris and tried to stop it for checks. They opened fire when the car hit them.

The driver and a front seat passenger, aged 25 and 31, were killed and a third man, aged 42, who was in the back of the car was injured.

Paris police are investigating the incident as attempted manslaughter on officers. The police watchdog (IGPN) questioned the suspected officer who allegedly carried out Monday’s shooting.
