Gabriela Lourdes Pérez del Solar Cuculiza was born in Ica and is 1.94 m tall. He started playing volleyball at the age of 13. His outstanding height and ability in the sport allowed him to play volleyball professionally. The athlete represented Peru in the World Cup 1985 And in the Olympic Games Seoul 1988. In 1993 he retired from the Peru national team but continued to play in Italy. He finally retired from volleyball for good in 2004.
In 2005, he surprised the entire country by entering politics with National Unity, a party of the former presidential candidate Lourdes Flores Nano, who invited her to become a congressman in the period 2006-2011. Del Solar was among the most voted candidates nationwide, winning her seat in the 2006 general election. In 2011, she ran again on the same bench and was re-elected.

The former volleyball player currently resides in Florida, USA with her husband Johnny and their two daughters Sabrina and Aylani. However, he occasionally travels to Peru. He returned to the country in late 2022 and was reunited with the “historic” women of the volleyball team, such as Rosa Garciabetter known as “China”, as well as with Sonia Heredia and Aurora Heredia.
Even though it’s been decades since Peru didn’t win the gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics (and the Peruvians never blamed the volleyball team for that fact), Gaby Pérez still has bittersweet memories of that moment.

“(I feel) sadness that I lost and emotion after so many years to be sure it was exciting. I’ve already hung my medal that I hadn’t hung up in years and now it’s hanging somewhere in my house and they’re bittersweet memories, shall we say,” he said.
