Gasoline prices: an analysis requested by the Energy Agency

The Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, the Minister responsible for Regional Economic Development and the Minister responsible for the Metropolis and the Montreal Region, Mr. Pierre Fitzgibbon, called on the Régie de l’énergie to reduce the difference between gasoline prices in Quebec and Canada examine gas station margins.

This decision comes shortly after the minister responsible for the state capital, Jonatan Julien, admitted that he had not looked further into the issue, even though the price is highest in this region.

“I find the price differences between this year and previous years worrying. We also compared margins in Quebec and Chaudière-Appalaches to those in other regions, and the difference is significant. “I want the government to shed light on these figures,” Minister Fitzgibbon said on Friday.

The difference can be up to 22 cents per liter between two regions of the same province.

Fitzgibbon requests that the Chaudière-Appalaches region be subject to a notice, that the Régie de l’énergie document any significant deviation, detailing the possible reasons and proposing solutions.

According to the Régie de l’énergie du Québec, the average retail margin in 2022 was 13.4 cents/liter in the Capitale-Nationale and 13.5 cents/liter in Chaudière-Appalaches, as opposed to 10.4 cents/liter in all of Quebec.

From January to June 2023, the average retail margin was 15.2 cents/liter in the Capitale-Nationale and 13.9 cents/liter in Chaudière-Appalaches, as opposed to 9.7 cents/liter overall in Quebec.
