Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani aren’t ‘really common parents,’ he says: ‘Different people’ with some ‘opposite views’

Gavin Rossdale spoke about how he and his ex-wife Gwen Stefani take different approaches to raising their three sons.

The 57-year-old musician and the 53-year-old singer – who were married from 2002 to 2016 – have sons Kingston, 17, Zuma, 14, and Apollo, 9. During an appearance on Thursday’s episode of Not So On the Hollywood podcast, Rossdale was asked how he makes co-parenting with Stefani work.

“I think you can go one way or two,” the Bush frontman said. “You can either do everything together and really raise them together and see how that goes, or you can just raise kids. And I think we’re just educating.”

“We’re very different people,” he added. “I don’t think there are huge similarities in the way we raise them, but I think it gives them an incredible perspective to then decide which parts of those two lives to inherit and with which part they want to move on.” comes naturally from the whole process.

“The important thing is to give them a broad view of things. And we definitely have some particularly opposing views. I think that would be really helpful for them to make up their own minds about how they should do it as individuals.”

The “Glycerine” singer explained that he and “The Voice” share time together with their children.

“So when I have them, I do my thing, my kind of things, and then vice versa, the other way around,” Rossdale said.

“I think they’re at the age now where they’re starting to appreciate what elements of what house they might adopt in adulthood,” he explained. “And maybe none of that, you know, maybe somehow they become something else.”

“Whether you’re co-parenting or a parent — and I certainly am a parent — all I care about is knowing that they’re loved and supported wherever they are, whatever the home always.”

“I feel good. The main thing is that I really have a connection with them. That’s all I care about. I’m super connected with them and can talk to them all the time and I’m with them. And I think that’s really important. It would be so sad to be different.

Rossdale also shared details about which of his sons are already following in their musician parents’ footsteps.

“I tried Zuma, he played drums,” Rossdale said. “My middle one played drums. That’s why we had a lot of drums in the garage in the beginning.

“He’s starting again, but Kingston just turned 17. He’s amazing as a songwriter, as a singer, as a musician. Really a lot better than I ever was when I was 17. So, who knows what the future holds for him, but he is. “He’s recording stuff and he’s super legal and that’s what he wants to do and he’s crazy.”

“It was actually really emotional,” he said. “To see what these kids went through and you look at the footage of their first visit to school, their first day of school, their meeting and all that stuff… so yeah, it was emotional.”

Rossdale also announced he is single after going through a painful breakup with an unnamed woman.

“I had a great time with a great person who left me in a spectacular way,” he said. “That was unfortunate. But then it really impacted my music, so I have a very twisted outlook on life where I can just monetize my pain.”
