Georgia star and top NFL draft nominee Jalen Carter was involved in the Jan. 15 car accident that killed second-year teammate Devin Willock and recruiting coordinator Chandler LeCroy, according to police, who say , the group raced their vehicles through the streets of Athens.
As a result, the Athens-Clarke District Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for 21-year-old Carter, who now faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing. The case will be referred to the Georgia Attorney General.
The investigation found that Chandler LeCroy, driver of the 2021 Ford Expedition, and Jalen Carter, driver of a 2021 Jeep Trackhawk, operated their vehicles in a manner consistent with racing shortly after leaving downtown Athens at approximately 2:30 a.m . ‘” the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a statement.
Carter, who is expected to be among the first players selected in next month’s NFL Draft, previously told police he was a mile from the accident but later admitted to following the other car when it was wrecked , and finally admitted that he was driving alongside LeCroy’s vehicle at the time of the collision.
He left the scene of the accident before police or emergency services arrived, before returning an hour and a half later and denying he was racing, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Police say both cars – Carter’s and LeCroy’s – crashed into each other in the hours after the Bulldogs’ parade, celebrating the team’s second straight national championship.
“The evidence showed that both vehicles were changing lanes, traveling in the center turn lane, traveling in opposite lanes, passing other motorists and traveling at high speeds in an apparent attempt to overtake each other,” the statement continued .
“Evidence indicated that the expedition was traveling at about 104 miles per hour just before the crash. The toxicology report showed Leroy’s blood alcohol concentration at the time of the crash was 0.197. Investigators determined that alcohol impairment, racing, reckless driving and speed were factors in the accident.
Alongside 24-year-old LeCroy, a recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs, and 20-year-old Willock, a promising offensive lineman, another recruiter, 26-year-old Tory Bowles and 21-year-old offensive lineman Warren McClendon were also injured.
