German farmers' association calls for restraint ahead of protests

Just ahead of a week of agricultural industry protests, the farmers' association called on participants to exercise restraint. Yesterday, the association appealed to the short message service

“We firmly reject demo symbolism, such as gallows, black flags or other symbols of extremist groups,” the post says. We should drastically distance ourselves from people who propagate fantasies of subversion or glorify violence.

This also applies to right-wing extremist circles and other fringe radical groups – “also because some of them want to appropriate our protest for their vile concerns”.

Starting Monday, farmers are planning numerous actions to demonstrate against the federal government's agricultural policy. Tractor convoys and rallies are planned.

Climbing when Habeck visits

On Thursday, a protest intensified in Schleswig-Holstein: protesters blocked a ferry on the North Sea coast and prevented Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) from getting off. The Public Ministry is investigating.

The incident led to a broad discussion in politics about protest culture in Germany as a whole. The farmers' association appealed to farmers to only demonstrate peacefully and only participate in registered and approved actions. The pressure group referred to the respective state and district farmers' associations.
