247 Germany and the United States, Ukraine’s two main military backers, intend to pressure Kiev to negotiate with Russia by limiting the quantity and quality of weapons supplied, German newspaper Bild reported on Friday, citing a source the German government.

According to the report, the two countries plan to supply Kiev with exactly the type and quantity of weapons that would allow the Ukrainian army to hold its current positions but not be able to retake Russiancontrolled areas.

In this way, Berlin and Washington hope to convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that there is no point in continuing to fight without directly asking him to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia, Bild added.

If this plan does not work, the USA and Germany will also draft a “Plan B” with a “Minsk Agreement without a deal”, in which the conflict between Russia and Ukraine would freeze without a negotiated border demarcation. Berlin wants to encourage Kiev to negotiate based on the current situation on the ground, Bild added.

CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that Russia has never rejected peace talks with Ukraine and that it was Ukraine that publicly announced that it would withdraw from the negotiation process.

Since then, Russian and Ukrainian delegations have held several rounds of peace talks, but in October 2022, Ukrainian President Zelensky signed a decree declaring that Kiev would not be allowed to hold peace talks while Putin was President of Russia.

On February 24, 2022, Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine. Kiev accuses Russia of violating ceasefire agreements between 2014 and 2022. President Putin said the operation was in response to demands from Donetsk and Luhansk to protect them from intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops.
