Google now tells you the cheapest dates for booking flights: Here’s how

  • Google recently updated Google Flights with more information that can help you save money.
  • Google tells you when the lowest prices for the trips are compared to the average and when the cheapest dates to book are in between.
  • I was trying to book a trip to Cancun from March 6th to March 13th. Google said the price is typical at around $282, but the cheapest booking time is usually later, between November 11 and February 9.

Google recently updated Google Flights with more information that can help you save money by booking travel in specific time slots.

Let’s say you’re planning a winter family vacation to Florida and want to book your flights. Google tells you if prices are currently lower or higher than average and when to book your flight to get the best deal.

I tested it myself using the example of a trip to Miami from December 5th to 19th. Google said prices were lower than usual, about $58 for a round-trip flight on Frontier Airlines. This suggests it’s worth booking now.

In a separate example, I tried to book a trip to Cancun from March 6th to March 13th. Google said the price, about $282, is typical, but prices would likely go down if I could wait to book the flight between November 11 and February 9.

“The lowest prices for similar trips to Cancun are usually found about one to four months after departure,” Google’s Flights page told me. “During this time, prices are on average about $40 cheaper.”

  • You can try it yourself by going to https://flights.google.com on your phone.
  • Enter your destination and departure dates, then tap Done.
  • Google will tell you at the top of the list of departing flights whether the prices are typical or not. Tap the down arrow to learn more, including when is the best time to book.

That’s it!
