Greece train crash: 40 dead, rescuers fight for survivors

After the train crash in Greece, rescue teams are still looking for possible survivors of the disaster. According to the latest information from the authorities, at least 40 people died in the collision and many others were injured.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of the country, said at the crash site:

“We will investigate the causes of this tragedy and do everything in our power to ensure that something like this does not happen again.”

Transport Minister resigned

More recently, the country’s transport minister took political responsibility and resigned.

Ioannis Xanthopoulos, leader of the rescuers at the scene, said:

“The first two carriages of the train and the locomotive were pushed together in a block. There was a fire and it was very difficult to approach the accident site. Then we put out the fire. But we couldn’t move forward in time because the heat was too great.”

Two trains collided

In Larissa, two trains collided head-on on the same track in the middle of the night. On the one hand, it was a passenger train bound for Thessaloniki, and on the other hand, a freight train.

Euronews reporter Apostolos Staikos was also at the crash site:

“Firefighters and rescue teams continue to fight and look for victims. Families of passengers arrive in the region, while the tragedy also leads to a fierce political conflict. Everyone says that the disaster could have been avoided.”
