MADRID, Oct 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Greece’s ruling party, the conservative New Democracy, has lost in five of the six regions that advanced to the second round of the country’s regional elections, in which it started as favorite after winning in seven of thirteen areas last Sunday.

Although New Democracy sought to govern in the country’s thirteen divisions, its candidate ultimately won only in the Peloponnese, leaving the party in power in eight regions and Athens, the capital, as well as Thessaloniki and Patras, the second and third largest regions, cities in Greece will lose.

Thus, in Athens, victory was won by Haris Doukas, the candidate supported by the Panhellenic Socialist Party (PASOK), a formation that also supported the winner in Thessaloniki, the independent candidate Stelios Angeloudis; In Patras, the Communist Party (KKE) candidate Kostas Peletidis won.

“It wasn’t a particularly good night for New Democracy. The political conclusions on the unification of the parties were made last Sunday,” said Greek Prime Minister, conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

It is worth noting that turnout in these second elections fell to 35 percent, compared to 53 percent last Sunday.
