Guatemalan Ríos presidential candidate urges vote

From the National School of Commercial Sciences in the historic center of this capital, the daughter of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983) described the act as “raising our voice”.

“It’s a great day, it’s also Teachers’ Day,” Ríos, who is running for the presidency for the second time, said in statements to the press after challenging the permit he received from the Constitutional Court.

“You always have to get up early, but today we left with joy for this very important moment,” he remarked.

He called for defending this right and including migrants planning to attend the 33 accredited schools in the United States.

“It is important to listen to the voice of all Guatemalans,” stressed Ríos, one of the top three figures in this political race alongside Sandra Torres (National Unity of Hope) and Edmont Mulet (Cabal).

The more than 9.3 million voters have until 5 p.m. local time to vote to select a new president, vice president, 160 members of Congress, 20 members of the Central American Parliament and 340 municipal mayors for the 2024-2028 period.

The TSE will release the preliminary results beginning at 9:00 p.m. local time and hearings on the review are scheduled for June 26-30.

A total of 20 observation and surveillance missions (ten local and nine foreign) are spread across this area, the largest number in the history of democracy.

Since 1985, when Guatemala embarked on this path, no candidate for the highest office in the state has won an absolute majority of valid votes in the first ballot.
