Guests are served a vai vai show and maniçoba at Zé Celso’s wedding

The wedding of José Celso Martinez Corrêa, 86, and Marcelo Drummond, 60, has another confirmed attraction: the Vai Vai Samba School. The club will perform at the end of the ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday (6) at the Teatro Oficina in the central region of São Paulo.

Zé Celso is expected to sing the song “Quatro Séculos de Paixão História do Teatro Brasileiro” with VaiVai, a samba enredo presented by Unidos de Vila Isabel at the 1975 Rio Carnival, which became an informal anthem of the Office over the Years.

Singers Marina Lima and Daniela Mercury will also perform at the celebration, which organizers describe as an “ecumenical artistic cult”.

The party’s menu will be eclectic, but with Brazilian roots. The initial cocktail is served with maniçoba, a pork stew with cassava leaves that has to be boiled for days to stop being poisonous. The delicacy is made by the Pão do Povo da Vida organization, which is also responsible for the donuts that will be distributed at the end of the celebration.

The ceremony also features a banquet cocktail by Executive Chef Martha Bender. Delights include ceviche, spiced guacamole, cornmeal cream, and fregola sarda pasta with pine nuts. For dessert, guests can enjoy guava paste with mascarpone mousse and warm cocada.

Marcelo and Zé Celso met in 1986 at the Teatro Oficina. A month later they shared an apartment and to this day they live in a love and companionship relationship in which sex is by no means a priority.

“We are married for the life we live, we share everything. We live together but we haven’t had sex in over 20 years, everyone has their lovers,” Drummond told the column, making it clear that the libertarian and Dionysian attitude of his partner — and himself too — isn’t just limited to the language and its theatrical productions.

The decision to formalize the union was made for practical reasons. Zé Celso, a fundamental figure in the history of Brazilian theater and one of the founders of Oficina, has no direct heirs and is concerned about the bureaucracy his partner will face after his death.
