Guterres criticizes this "unprecedented escalation of bombings" Israel against Gaza

Cairo, Oct 28 (EFE). – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today criticized Israel’s “unprecedented escalation of bombings” against the Gaza Strip after the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave on Friday.

“I felt encouraged by what seemed to be a growing consensus about the need for at least a humanitarian pause in the Middle East. Unfortunately, I was instead surprised by an unprecedented escalation of bombings,” Guterres said on his X account (formerly Twitter). during a visit to Qatar.

The Portuguese denounced that this expansion of the Israeli campaign against the punished Palestinian enclave “undermines the humanitarian objectives” of the resolution and stressed that “this situation must be reversed.”

“I reiterate my call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, along with the unconditional release of the hostages and the delivery of aid on a scale that meets the dramatic needs of the people of Gaza, where a humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding before our eyes,” Guterres said .

The UN Secretary-General made this statement after Gaza last night experienced the most intense Israeli bombardment since the start of the war, which led to the collapse of the communications network.

Likewise, the Israeli army announced that it had expanded its ground operations in the Gaza Strip and that the war against Hamas had entered “a new phase.”

All this after the UN General Assembly on Friday adopted by an overwhelming majority of 120 votes a resolution sponsored by Arab countries for an imminent ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave, where more than 7,700 Palestinians have already died in Israeli bombings.

Guterres said yesterday that Gaza was experiencing “an unprecedented avalanche of human suffering” in the face of scant humanitarian aid for which “everyone must take responsibility.”

“It is the moment of truth. History judges us all,” he said in a statement read by his spokesman. EFE
