preferences and dislikes
Throughout his career, David Bowie, who died on January 10, 2016 at the age of 69, was always very open and direct. He expressed his sincere admiration for some of his fellow artists, such as Iggy Pop (his albums “The Idiot” and “Lust for Life” were produced by the White Duke, who also co-wrote several songs with his friend) and Stevie Ray Vaughan ( who played on the 1983 album “Let's Dance”). He never made a secret of his dislikes.
Gary Numan
Gary Numan, pioneer of new romantic music, has always been a big Bowie fan. However, the White Duke believed he was copying him: for this reason he had him thrown out of the Kenny Everett Christmas Show in 1980. “It bothered me at the time because I was a big fan of him and he had been such an important part of my life for so many years, so I was pretty disappointed – Numan told the NME in 2021 –. But later I realized that we all go through times when we are more fragile or paranoid and aren't sure how to fit into it all.
Axl Rose
In the late 1980s, David Bowie was dating Ola Hudson, Slash's mother (she had made some of his stage costumes in the past). In 1989, he accompanied her on the set of the video for Guns N' Roses' “It's So Easy.” Frontman Axl Rose noticed the White Duke's obvious interest (who had had a few too many drinks) in his then-girlfriend (model Erin Everly, daughter of singer Don Everly) and attacked him by hitting him. The two clarified it following this episode.
Adriano Celentano
In 1999, David Bowie took part in Adriano Celentano's show on Rai 1. To be honest, I don't feel like presenting the single “Thursday's Child”. After his performance, he sat down on the steps of the stage to be interviewed, but the conversation was unmemorable (and to the final question, “Do you think we'll see each other again in the future?”, Bowie replied succinctly, “After that, I A few days later, during the press conference for the presentation of “Hours” at the Four Seasons in Milan, Bowie said to the journalists present (who asked him a question about his participation Celentano's show): “I completely understood what he was saying.” Me. I think he's an idiot. But I was there to play my song. Anyway, I don't think they'll invite me again . Molleggiato replied bluntly: “Maybe I'm an idiot, but being listed on the stock exchange definitely confuses you.” The topic of the interview arises from a statement Bowie made in Paris in which he said that he willingly participated in “Honestly I Don’t Care Because I Was “Socially Involved.” While I fooled myself into thinking he was telling the truth, I tried to engage him on a social level during the show and instead realized he was “socially engaged” just to promote his album.
Jesus and Mary necklace
“It sounds like the Velvet Underground without Lou Reed.” This is how David Bowie defined the Jesus and Mary chain in 1987.
Elton John
At first, David Bowie and Elton John were friends. Mr Rocket Man said: “We went out with Marc Bolan, we went to gay clubs, but then I think we just grew apart.” Although the White Duke has made some digs at Sir Elton over the years, his Admiration for Bowie never waned.
country music
He's not a real character, but rather an entire genre of music that the White Duke never appreciated: country music. Bowie once said about his listening in an interview with journalist Terri Gross: “I think the only music I never listened to (as a child, editor's note) was country and western, and that's still true today still.”
