At least four people were killed and dozens more injured in a stampede at a concert at a university in southern India.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala state, local officials said.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the sad death of four students in a stampede at Cochin University of Science & Technology. Heartfelt condolences to their families. Prayers for a speedy recovery of the injured,” said Arif Mohammad Khan, governor of Kerala state. said in a post on Xthe platform formerly known as Twitter.

According to multiple reports, at least 64 other people were injured in the stampede. Singer Nikhita Gandhi was scheduled to perform at the tech fest, which was held at an outdoor auditorium on campus.

“Heartbroken and devastated by what happened in Kochi this evening. Such an unfortunate incident occurred before I could even leave for the performance venue. No words may be enough to express this deep sadness. My prayers go out to the families of the students,” Gandhi wrote in a statement on Instagram.

Students stumble and fall during rushes

Citing local law enforcement, NDTV reported that people waited outside the auditorium when it started raining and then rushed inside to seek shelter, causing a stampede. Several people slipped, fell and were trampled.

According to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, the injured were transported to local hospitals. At least four of the injured are in critical condition.

The university has canceled several events scheduled for Sunday.
