Hezbollah announced that it fired a new volley of rockets against “the Meron air base” for the second day in a row on Tuesday, February 27, in response to Israeli air strikes on eastern Lebanon the previous day.
For the first time since the war in Gaza began, the Israeli army on Monday attacked Hezbollah positions in Baalbek, a Hezbollah stronghold in eastern Cedar country, killing two fighters far outside the region's borders normally attacked. These attacks prompted an initial response from Hezbollah with approximately sixty rockets fired toward the Israeli Nafah base in the occupied Golan Heights.
Hezbollah also said at the end of the afternoon that it had attacked for the first time with dozens of Katyusha rockets “the command post of the 146th Division in Gaaton,” about 8 kilometers from the border.
“Dangerous cycle of violence”
The U.N. special coordinator in Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, responded Tuesday by “urging for an immediate end to this dangerous cycle of violence.” The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Tuesday lamented “the worrying development of exchanges of fire” and “an intensification of attacks,” reiterating that the latest escalation risks “jeopardizing a political solution to the conflict.”
Since the war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023 between Israel and Hamas, Hezbollah has attacked Israeli military positions daily in support of its Palestinian ally. Israel carries out attacks on border villages and operations against leaders of the Shiite movement.
At least 284 fighters, mostly from Hezbollah and allied groups, and around 44 civilians have been killed in more than four months, according to a count by Agence France-Presse. According to the army, ten soldiers and six civilians were killed on the Israeli side.
