HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) review: our full review – Frandroid

HP relies heavily on the gamer segment. It is not for nothing that the HyperX brand bought and Omen is very often mentioned in esports competitions around the world. In France, however, Asus remains largely the leader with its ROG series. Is it due to a lack of interest in the products themselves? The 2023 HP Omen Transcend 16 doesn’t quite agree.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) design

What’s really noticeable when you pick up the HP Omen Transcend 16 for the first time is how much… It has absolutely none of the usual special features of gamer configurations. In truth, it looks like a professional laptop, with its extremely simple metal chassis that Razer wouldn’t entirely deny. With a thickness of 2 cm, it is actually quite thin for its category and weighs “only” 2.17 kilos.

The 16-inch format is a good compromise here in order to use a powerful yet easily transportable device. What we particularly remember about this HP Omen Transcend 16 is the bottom edge of the screen, which is still very thick. But unfortunately most gaming PCs have kept it so it’s part of the current machines.

Keyboard and touchpad

The “gamer” argument in terms of design can only be found in the keyboard, where the usual ZQSD keys are the only ones that are transparent and allow the backlight to pass through more easily. These are fairly classic switches with full-size keys, whose travel is still greater than most references on the market, but whose slight rebound does not usually bother a gamer. Comfortable, yes, but the precision suffers. We also use a TKL keyboard format, which does away with the numeric keypad, but instead integrates the directional arrows and the associated shortcuts at the top.

The touchpad itself is quite wide and pleasant to use, although its gliding properties would have merited a glass coating rather than a plastic coating. However, there is one detail: the HP Omen Transcend 16 at least makes an effort to integrate a good diagonal, while many competitors assume that their buyers will connect an external mouse anyway.

connections

On the left side of the device we find two Thunderbolt 4 compatible USB-C ports and the combo jack. A simple USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 is integrated on the right. On the back we have the power connection, an HDMI 2.1 port, an Ethernet port and a second USB-A port.

The features are quite extensive and the only thing missing is an SD card reader. It’s nice to see that despite this very thin format, HP has managed to include so many ports in different orientations and placements to suit many office configurations. This is all very well thought out.

Webcam and audio

The HP Omen Transcend 16 doesn’t stand out here, with a very basic 1080p webcam whose processing isn’t particularly brilliant. You know the song: video conferencing and nothing more. At least facial recognition is supported. The B&O speakers, on the other hand, are surprisingly precise. If, as always, the bass is missing, the highs are very good and the mids are not completely erased from the score. While the HP Omen Transcend 16’s speakers aren’t the best out there, they’re more comfortable on the ear than most other gaming machines.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) screen

Our test sample is equipped with a 16.1-inch mini-LED panel with anti-reflection treatment that supports a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, i.e. Quad HD in a 16:10 ratio. It is capable of a 240Hz refresh rate supported by G-Sync technology.

Under our probe and with DisplayCal software, we were able to measure 146.4% sRGB space coverage and 103.7% DCI-P3 space coverage. The maximum brightness was measured at 775 cd/m², which offers an almost infinite contrast ratio thanks to the mini-LED technology. The average color temperature is 6875K, slightly cooler than the expected NTSC standard, but the average Delta E00 value of 1.66 proves that the panel was very well calibrated from the factory.

This is simply outstanding and proof that mini-LED technology has a bright future. Assuming someone can afford it one day, because it contributes to the big price increase of this test configuration.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) Software

At this point, HP still has a lot of work to do. In addition to pop-up advertisements, which are far from rare, the Omen management software itself offers everything you would expect in terms of settings… But how messy it can be to use. We feel here that the developer wanted to offer an all-in-one platform, but through this effort he has only complicated what should be much easier to manage in everyday life.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) performance

In our test configuration, the 2023 HP Omen Transcend 16 is equipped with the latest Intel Core i9-13900HX, an SoC with 24 cores – 8 powerful and 16 efficient – for 32 threads that can accelerate up to 5.4 GHz. It is coupled with 32GB of DDR5 RAM at 5600MHz on two SODIMM ports as well as a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 hard drive. On the graphics side we find the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with 8GB of GDDR6, whose TGP is slightly lowered to 130W (compared to 140W normally).

Benchmarks

We always find the same duel that separates Intel and AMD since Ryzen emerged. In Cinebench R23, the Intel Core i9-13900HX shows its strengths with a single-core performance of 2102 points, but lags behind in the multi-core performance with a score of 24589 points. It’s not able to spread its wings in this case, but it remains incredibly efficient, giving us a PCMark 10 score of 8201 points.

In the game we find 2964 points on Speed Way, 7521 points on Port Royal and 6200 points on Time Spy Extreme by 3D Mark, with DirectX ray tracing performance rated at 36.11 FPS. Everything is within the range of what is expected from an RTX 4070, although not as good as most computers equipped with this GPU. Storage is one of the most efficient solutions that can be integrated into modern configurations.

Mission

1694370648 391 HP Omen 16 Transcend u0000nf review our full review –

The difference of 10 W observed with the TGP is clearly responsible for this. In-game, we observe an average drop of around 10 FPS across all games tested compared to a device that didn’t suffer this slight loss. And if DLSS 3 helps a lot in finding a playable framerate, it’s better to be a bit more conservative with the settings or disable ray tracing on a daily basis. Still, for such a good PC to find such performance is excellent.

Cooling and noise

We better understand the drop in TDP and TGP by observing the device’s thermal management. Surely the 2023 HP Omen Transcend 16 tends to reach quite high temperatures on its body, with a maximum of 56 °C on the bottom, but on the other hand … What is, it knows how to remain discreet. Even at full power, the fans never achieve the “helicopter start” effect that we are used to in gaming configurations. If we had to sacrifice an average of 10 FPS for this, we would accept the offer without batting an eyelid.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) battery life

The 2023 HP Omen Transcend 16 comes with a large 97 Wh battery, almost the maximum possible for a computer before being stopped at customs. To take full advantage of its performance, be sure to connect it to its 280W power supply.

And as always, with these configurations we find a usage time in an office environment of between 4 and 5 hours. In itself, that might even be good news, as we can expect the mini-LED screen to be more energy efficient than most IPS LCD panels built into these configurations. But here it is: It won’t actually cost you an afternoon of work. So no wonder.

HP Omen 16 Transcend (u0000nf) price and availability

The HP Omen Transcend 16 is available from 1799 euros. But for the configuration we tested with a mini LED screen and RTX 4070 you have to pay no less than 3225 euros. At least you get a HyperX Cloud II Core headset for it.
